Sneak Peek Tucson Finds & Review

por | | 0 comments
Sneak Peek Tucson Finds & ReviewAnother buying season is over in Tucson; vendors have packed up and are now returning home or moving onto the next show and Tucson is probably settling down just a bit until the next big event. Usually we go to Tucson in the 1st week of activities, but because of scheduling this year couldn’t quite make it until the 2nd week.

The difference that I saw was in missing out on the quality and more unique stones and finds in the first week; whereas with the second week it appeared picked over, but pricing was a little cheaper compared to the first week, especially toward the end of the week when the vendors were willing to deal/bargain for their products. I can’t say one show is better than others, just as everyone has their ‘favorite’. But I have my favorites and may have even added a few new ones to the ‘continue to attend list’. It really is up to the person, their schedule, finances, and being able to get to Tucson. Although if you’re in the business of jewelry and lapidary, I would highly recommend going, even just once!

With that said, we still were able to find quite a few unique and unusual finds such as California Palm Wood Jasper, Ivoryite, Star Jasper, Inca Jade, Black Agate/Pyrite, Ammonites (in two different cuts!), Goniatites, and many other stones. But, not to be forgotten, we also got lots of Turquoise, Magnesite, Onyx, Jaspers, Agates, pendants, glass/ceramic and wooden beads, crystals, and much more.

Here’s just a taste of what we did pick up in Tucson….check back and stay tuned as we début many of these stones and more in coming styles this season!

Fashion, academically.

por | | 0 comments

I'm a student at a liberal arts school. I spend August through May with the writings of great minds. My freshman year I fell in love with Hobbes and last year introduced me to the wonders of Sartre and Hannah Arendt. My copy of The Second Sex is packed with margin notes, I kind of adore Beckett, and I think that Rousseau was a lazy hippie. The intense curriculum is sort of responsible for my blog. With upwards of 200 pages to read a night, there's little time to browse Style.com or accessorize. While I started the blog as a high schooler, it's become essential to my sanity since starting college. My love for the fashion world needs an outlet and Classic Black Pumps provides that. And I try to incorporate fashion into my studies. I wrote a paper about Communism meaning the ultimate downfall of the fashion industry. My Natural Sciences final essay talked about fashion trends being an accelerated mirror of evolution. It's a little mission of mine to prove to my fellow scholars that fashion has a place in academics. Now, there's already a pretty brilliant list of this nature on the wonderful blog, Academic Chic, but I thought I would make my own version of the list.

-Fashion, Culture, and Identity; by Fred Davis
-The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed the Clothing Business Forever; by Teri Agins
-The Language of Fashion; by Roland Barthes
-The Fashion System; by Roland Barthes
-Appearance and Identity: Fashioning the Body in Postmodernity; by Llewellyn Negrin
-Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution; by Caroline Weber*
-The Fashion Reader; by Abby Lillethun
-Fugitive Denim: A Moving Story of People and Pants in a Fugitive World; by Rachel Louise Snyder

Fashion isn't just about what looks pretty. It's about history, society, and art. And we style mavens need to be well versed on the subject. Happy reading!

*This book is pretty much the cornerstone of my scholarly forays into fashion. If you only read one, this is it. So good.

Strands of Stone Chips

por | | 0 comments
Natural stones in chip form are sometimes hard to work with; often I use them as spacers or in earrings. In these two designs, I used them as the accent to the focal pendants. The pendants in both are beautiful Brazilian Ocos Agates; deep shades of green, black and white in one and the other is pure innocent of white. Each has been encased in handcrafted non-tarnish wire.

Strands of Stone Chips

To the left is a 2strand in Fancy Jasper with the focal pendant of snowy white Ocos Agate.

Strands of Stone Chips

To the right is a 2 strand in Snakeskin Japer, Sandy Opals and Swarovski Crystals, with a focal pendant of deep green/black Ocos Agate.

Both are available at our website along with many other unique natural stone designs.

Native Element Metal - Copper

por | | 0 comments
Native Element Metal - CopperMost minerals occur in combinations of chemicals as compounds. However, 20 or so are ‘native elements’ that occur in small quantities by themselves in relatively pure form. Most native elements are metals such as gold, which does not readily combine with other materials. Many metals typically occur in conjunction with others in ores, but these less reactive metals are often found alone.

So let’s take copper, a warm reddish gold in color, copper is the most easily recognized of all metals. It is quite soft (a hardness of 2.5 to 3), and sometimes found pure in native form, which is why it was one of the first metals people learned to use. It is the easiest to solder and is very flexible and tough. In addition, it has a very good conductivity that is only slightly less than silver.

Copper was probably the first metal used to make weapons and objects. It’s uses included making arrow and spear tips, axes and other tools that can be traced back to the forth Native Element Metal - Coppermillennium in the Middle East. The oldest knives found, dating back 6,000 years, are made of copper. Pure copper is often found in sulphide-rich veins in warm desert areas, or in cavities in ancient lava flows. Like silver, it often grows in branching masses and tarnishes quickly. Yet the tarnish is bright green, not black like silver, and a copper deposit is often revealed by bright green stains on rocks called copper bloom. As a native element, copper is quite rare, so most of the copper used today comes from ores such as chalcopyrite.

Magical and ritual lore find that copper has been linked with the divine. During ancient Mesopotamian times, it was attributed to the Queen of Heaven as well as to the goddessesNative Element Metal - Copper associated with the planet Venus. It has also been sacred to the Sun in Babylon as well as to the early inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest. Copper can be used effectively on all chakras but is particularly effective on the heart and root chakras as preparation for meditation. It has long been used to stimulate healing. This is said to be because of the copper’s ability to balance the body’s polarity, or the flow of the projective and receptive energies. Copper’s healing applications are boundless. In Mexico, a copper penny is placed on the navel for relief of rheumatism, arthritis, and any painful condition. A metal of Venus, copper is also known to attract love and money; old pennies minted in leap years, are often placed in the kitchen of a house to attract money to the household. Copper is said to be a lucky metal because of its past solar attributions, and so can be used in combination with any luck-bringing gemstones.

Visit our jewelry collections to find your hidden treasure of luck.

Title: Grocery Shopping Fun @ Market Basket ("The Zoo"), Mall at Whitney Field

Courtesey of a nice $30 gift card from my workplace, we go to one of the Market Basket supermarket locations (Mall at Whitney Field, Leominster, Massachusetts), to stockpile groceries, with the help of said gift card. Problem here is, this place is mobbed 24/7/365. Here's a grocery run in the most crowded supermarket I've ever shopped in, and lucky me, this is actually a "dead" moment, which made things "easy"!

Interiors: Creamy Natural

por | | 0 comments

In sharp contrast to my post yesterday, I'm offering up some casual, comfortable, soothing, creamy neutral spaces.  The versatility in these spaces show us that sandy beige, off white, and pale yellow work with any aesthetic to create a space that depends less on sharp lines and more on soft comfort.  Assuming one day B and I have a house of our own, I will be definitely be utilizing these spaces for inspiration.

Title: Jaguar S-Type 4.0L V8 EXECUTIVE AUTOMATIK Full Review,Start Up, Engine, and In Depth Tour

For more in depth reviews check my channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/avtomobil... Filmed by: Tomaž Kožar Jesenice Ann Arbor - The Jaguar S-type was one of the most keenly anticipated new cars of the past decade. The baby Jag, as it was universally referred to (before the name was announced, anyway), would bring the leaping-cat cachet to a much wider audience, one that was eager for Jaguar's almost mystical combination of Olde English snob appeal wrapped in sexy, feline sheetmetal. Since it went on sale midway through 1999, the S-type has been a commercial success, nearly doubling the marque's sales. But, while the public has rushed to embrace it, critics have scrutinized the S-type because it's the first Jaguar to share its platform with a Ford Motor Company product (the Lincoln LS). Although all S-types are assembled at Castle Bromwich, England, the car was engineered with Ford. Ardent Jaguar fans were concerned that the S-type could be something less than a true Jaguar because of that. Turns out that the under-the-skin commonality with Lincoln was handled adroitly. The two cars drive differently, and the S-type feels like a Jaguar. But after twelve months and 30,000 miles with a sapphire-blue S-type 4.0, count us among those who see elsewhere in the S-type a veneer of Britishness, of Jaguarness, that in places appears thin. Take, for instance, that feline sheetmetal. Start at the front--no subtlety here with the oval grille and four round headlights. By and large, it works. "The Jag is an absolute hit with the general public," reported associate editor Joe DeMatio after a trip to his mid-Michigan hometown. "They know it's a Jaguar and are very excited about it." To our eyes, though, the side is entirely too busy, with too many character lines. More than one staffer likened the main crease along the door handles to that of a Chevy Lumina. That's like suggesting the queen wears army boots. But it was the interior that came in for the most criticism. Jaguar has always had a special knack for interiors, which invariably are likened to a men's club. When one contributing writer described the S-type's atmosphere as "more pub than club," it was a cute way of saying it falls short of the traditional Jaguar standards. It's hard not to think that the S-type interior shows what happens when the idea of British luxury gets refracted by the Dearborn "glass house" that is Ford Motor Company's world headquarters and then blurred further by myopic MBAs who can't see past the next quarter's bottom line. "There's none of the detailing and craftsmanship that made Jag interiors so nice," said executive editor Mark Gillies, who's been riding in Jaguars since he was a lad in short pants. Whatever one thinks of the way the interior looks, there is no getting around its lack of storage space (which is somewhat alleviated for 2001 with the CD changer's move from the glove box to the trunk) or its tight accommodations overall. On a happier note, seating comfort generally received good reviews, even on long drives. Extended road trips demonstrated just how much the S-type coddled its captain and crew and how eagerly it gobbled up the miles. With 281 horsepower and 287 pound-feet of torque, the 4.0-liter V-8 never wants for power, either on the highway or in town. Despite a slow-shifting transmission, it provides the kind of smooth, effortless thrust that really does bring to mind those images from the Discovery Channel where the live jaguar sprints across the Yucatan to chomp down on some hapless wild pig. We'd say the V-8 is beyond reproach, but it was sometimes a little lazy starting on cold mornings, and its short cruising range was appreciated only by true devotees of service station architecture Part of the S-type's seductive quality on road trips, long or short, was its accomplished blend of a responsive chassis and a creamy ride. Helping our car's double-wishbone suspension achieve this feat was Jaguar's optional CATS (Computer Active Technology Suspension), which automatically switches the dampers between soft and firm settings. Unfortunately, as the miles accumulated, the ride became noticeably ragged, with the S-type transmitting an un-Jaguar-like amount of impact harshness to the cabin. In addition, the brakes always felt undersized, requiring more pedal pressure and travel than we would have liked. The steering, however, was spot-on in its quickness and effort. Curiously, for 2001, Jaguar has switched to a ZF power steering unit, which the company says improves steering feel and isolation. We drove a 2001 model, and, despite those contradictory claims, the steering felt pretty much the same, but that's fine with us.

Title: Kishin, Day blooming waterlily from Garet Uemura

Hybridized in 2004 by crossing two unnamed lilies. This lily has very double flowers that are pastel lavender on the outside with creamy white-lavender interior petaloids. Unlike Kelly Mashiba, the petals on this lily are very long and slender. The leaves are solid green on the top with purple below. In Japanese, Kishin means "Joyful Heart" and is the "Kaimyo" (Buddhist name) of Garet's grandfather.
