Here Endth National Emo Week

por | | 0 comments
So having left the house and wandered down the street to Nate’s stoop. 5 cigarettes, a chat with my bestie and a pair of Grandpa Slippers later, things have fallen into perspective….

I’ve been a miserable cow all week and I thought it was simply because of what had (or more appropriately hadn’t) been happening in my love life….

Long story short, I never thought I’d having feelings for someone so soon after my last relationship….and its pretty rare to stumble across genuinely beautiful, amazing people you feel you could fall for….knowing how rare it is, it’s a bit of a kick in the teeth to start to open up to someone, only to get rejected… truth be told, I’m guilty of treading on one or two hearts myself so this is probably some long overdue karma.

I felt like a failure and a bit lost……something has been missing inside of me for awhile now and as much as I’ve tried to fill the void with boys, booze and ridiculous work benders (try 38hrs at the day job and 7 Dj gigs in the space of one week on an average of about 4hrs sleep per night) its simply made me feel more and more empty…..

But I’ve realized what it is……I miss my creativity. I miss art. I miss making beautiful things and working on projects for the sake of artistic fulfillment……

I’ve moved home so many times the last couple of months that all my sewing machines, fabric, art bits and bobs and all my jewellery stuff have pretty much lived in storage (and are currently rotting in the garage of the last house I was staying at until I can afford a removalist). I haven’t had a space to call my own that I feel comfortable to relax and be creative in until just recently. In terms of music, I’d neglected the sound I was actually passionate about in order to make money with all the easy RnB gigs that were being offered to me, and whilst I’d been successful in landing club work, in actual fact, deep down, I felt like a failure because I wasn’t following my heart….. and in terms of relationships, I realized that the most important relationship in my life is with myself and my creativity, and when I’m not true to it I become a ratty mess that no one else is going to want to deal with anyway.

So here’s to a new outlook and some exciting change……
I’m foregoing all the random crap I generally waste my money on this week and booking Man With A Van to bring all of my studio equipment and the rest of my stuff to my new home.

I’d been pondering it for awhile but I’m ready to start storyboarding for a new wearable art collection….the fact I’ve had stockists asking me about this for months but never got around to it because I was too busy hating my evenings playing Akon in shit rnb clubs is disgusting….

On Sat I quit my last remaining Rnb gig……my schedule is now free to concentrate on the bookings I actually care about. Yes I’ll miss the money but god it feels like such a weight off my chest

Scott and I have decided to start our own night…..2 step and uk garage. I very much doubt we’ll make any money out of it but its something we’re both passionate about and it will be a great way to catch up with our friends on a regular basis. I’ve also got a new Sat night launching which is a world music/instrumental/chilled house/experimental lounge evening kicking off which we’re looking at combining with a strong exotic/artistic visual presence.

I guess it’s simply time to get back to the real me…….the kooky, creative kid who always liked to paint whilst listening to BBC audio stories. If these women can make a success by being true to themselves and their art, then I can too…

I’m off for an early night and a date with my sketchbook xx

Title: Solo Bass a la Steve Lawson - Here Endeth the Lesson

A very quick improvised jam over Steve Lawson's 'Here Endeth the Lesson', expanding on some of Steve's nice motifs. My phrasing is nowhere near as good as his and this video is an insult to the virtuoso that is Lawson...but hey, i gave it a go anyway. Few bum phrases here and there but eh, i'll survive! Taken off the free downloadable album of his titled "Lessons Learned From An Aged Feline Pt.1" at his website http://www.stevelawson.net/wordpress/ I'm just too awesome for the Looperlative looper, so i used my Boss RC-2 to loop this instead. lol. Played on my Yamaha TRB1006 through Hartke 2x10 combo, an RC-2 Looper and a Digitech multi-effects unit. I wish i had a fretless bass...

Dreaming of the Show: Nurse from Romeo and Juliet

Dreaming of the Show: Nurse from Romeo and Juliet
My idea of the Nurse in her youth

My darling devotees,

So this is a special request from my little sis, the best little sis EVER! She sent me such an encouraging letter the other day telling me how proud she was of me and I just want to say I love and I'm really proud of you too sister!

Ever since she suggested doing Nurse in Romeo and Juliet I've been trying to figure out what would be the best representation of her character, should I have the chance of running a Romeo and Juliet production . This post like all other dreaming of the show post will be done in the process of costume designer. To find out more about costume design and dreaming of the show posts you can click here.

Nurse from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Time period and place I would set it in:

21st Century America

Plot Summary:

I don't know if there is anyone who isn't familiar with the plot of Romeo and Juliet but it can be found here. Just to refresh your memory, it is a play about two teenagers who fall in love and who come from opposing families in a long standing feud. They have to meet in secret and after they get married in secret, it is hard for them to stay together because of the feud and because of Juliet's father's insistence on her marriage to Paris ( the suitor her father favors). In order to stay with Romeo, she and Friar Lawrence come up with a plan of escape. They decide Juliet should drink a potion to put her in such a deep sleep that she appears to be dead, and after her family has placed her in a tomb the Friar and Romeo would rescue her so that she and Romeo could run away to Mantua. Unfortunately, Romeo never gets the message of the plan. Instead thinking that Juliet is dead, he kills himself at her tomb (as well as Paris whom he finds there). Juliet wakes and finding Romeo dead, she kisses him one last time to retrieve some of the poison that killed him and when that doesn't kill her she stabs herself with his dagger. After seeing what became of their children, the two families reconcile.

Character summary: I imagine the nurse as having a character similar to that of the cool aunt who encourages you and who believes in love, free will and flower power. In the beginning she is Juliet's confidante, who takes care of her and worries about her, but is also someone Juliet feels she can trust with the knowledge of her secret relationship and who believes she must follow her heart. She is the one who tells Romeo Juliet's name, and even helps them to meet by getting a rope ladder for her. However, as time goes on she seems to become more hesitant to help them and finally tells Juliet it would be best if she just married Paris and acted like Romeo was dead( I imagine at this point in my production she would tell Juliet to just 'go with the flow'). At this point Juliet stops speaking to her because of her 'disloyalty', . Despite her change of heart I still believe she deeply cares about and loves Juliet and wants nothing but the best for her.

Keywords to describe her: flower child (70s youth), grown up hippie, cool, generally laid back, caring, peace, love and happiness, loves Juliet, responsible, up to date with current trends, young at heart, slightly annoying and embarrassing at times.

Key Elements to The Nurse's Style:

long maxi skirts

free flowing floral print tops in bright colors

big flower hairbands and curly untame hair

tie-dye shirts on days off,

minimal fringe on bags and shoes

beaded leather headbands

tan leather jackets

vests paired with billowy shirts (blousons)

flared trousers

Delicate gold peace sign earrings and flower necklaces.

Make-up: pretty light. even distribution of foundation, light grey eyeshadow with brown eyeliner and pale pink lips. The goal is to appear youthful, with a minimalist approach towards makeup. Brightly coloured nail (maybe sky blue).

P.S. So let me know what you think. Have you read Romeo and Juliet? What did you think of it? I personally didn't consider it one of Shakespeare's best but it was beautifully written. How would you portray the Nurse if you had the chance to run a Romeo and Juliet show? Feel free to let me know in the comments below.

How to know if you're a Music Producer

por | | 0 comments

How to know if you're a Music Producer
Dearest Devotees,

In the How to Know if You're a Songwriter post I mentioned I would do a couple more music related posts, because of how much music means to me. I really like doing these kind of posts because they give you an insight into the person I really am, and all the things that make up an average day in my life. I also really love these posts because they give me the opportunity to connect with other like-minded spirits and also to appreciate the diversity of characteristics and characters that make up my devotee base. Much like the previously mentioned post on being a songwriter, the things I list below are just characteristics I've noticed in people who are/ want to be music producers. So without further ado here is my list of ways to know if you have music producer potential:

When you hear a song for the first time a video you have instantaneously created begins to play in your head.

You sometimes check up lyrics and analyze them for plot possibilities and video potential

You predict how well a song will do on the charts and at award shows.

You are always very interested in new musical talent.

You try to learn as much as you can about every aspect of music, constantly.

If you are in school you can probably be found taking widely different music and/ or dances classes at the same time.

When your friends invite you to karaoke you give them performance advice and sometimes critique their vocal quality.

You find audio engineering, music theory and even music history oddly fascinating.

You are always clued in with the latest innovations in technology and programming.

You manage crises well.

Business is not your foe.

You know what’s happening in the music industry as its happening in the industry.

After seeing a band perform for the first time you already know their image, style and genre.

Beats are constantly on the end of your finger tips.

You think life should have a soundtrack and may have created a few playlists for important events , describing them.

You know the names of all the top producers in the music industry.

When you hear about a music video for the first time you ask for the label/ producer not the artist

You love bringing music to life.

You critique videos that you see on TV (or youtube) and sometimes envision how you could have done it better.

How to know if you're a Music Producer

You appreciate all the different genres of music and sometimes draw inspiration from two widely different genres, to create the next big thing.

You know that songwriting and producing through social networking are two major ways to enter the industry.

You try to create the perfect environment and medium to transfer the emotional quality of the music from the artist to the audience.

You are always on the lookout for unexpectedly amazing collaborations between artists in the music industry.

You are aware that music production is really tasking, and sometimes not as glamorous as it’s made out to be but you love it anyway.

P.S. So let me know what you think. What qualities/characteristics do you think a music producer should have? Are there any music producers out there? Feel free to let me know in the comments below.
