Well, what a great couple of days I had with Jagdeep and Martin for their Sikh wedding!

Two days shooting was pretty hectic - and the editing even more so, but the colour and the energy and the happiness of both families meant that I really, really enjoyed photographing their wedding at Hardwick Hall in County Durham.

On Saturday afternoon and evening, I was part of the pre-wedding celebrations when Jag and her family held traditional Sikh ceremonies with invited family and friends - I'll post photographs from that at a later date.

On Sunday I was up and out early to 'check-out' the venue and meet Martin when he arrived and then headed across to Wynyard where Jag was preparing for her wedding celebrations. The previous evening had been a great success - I don't believe too many of the wedding party had a whole lot of rest and sleep!

Many of the photographs at Asian weddings in the UK is taken up with traditional family photos - everyone LOVES to have their photograph taken and EVERYONE has to have their photograph taken with every other member of the family and with the bride and groom - so there's a whole lot of energy to expand during the day.

But the opportunity for great photographs are everywhere, and there's no point being shy at an Asian wedding either - you have to get right in among the fun and make sure you capture all the photographs that family want and expect - and the images that I need to capture to show the wedding celebrations is all it's glory!

Family members gathered at the hotel for the civil ceremony and when Jag turned up, male family members gathered to guide her to the room - and there were smiles everywhere as Martin and Jagdeep's eyes met in front of the registrar.

Little Olivia did a brilliant job with her speech and she made sure that the other bridesmaids stood with her at the front before the newly married couple, full of smiles, led the wedding party from the room to their reception.

After drinks the bride and groom and guests headed to the main area where more traditional Sikh ceremonies were held - grandparents and parents feeding cake to the bride and groom before the cake was cut and the dancing could begin!

The great thing about all the Asian weddings I have covered across the north east of England and north Yorkshire, is that it doesn't matter whether you are four years old or 84 years old - EVERYONE gets on the dance floor, and it's difficult to get them off!

Luckily, the first course of the food beckoned but as soon as they were finished, everyone was back on the dancefloor, and it was the same after the main course and the puddings too!

I was right in among all the dance contests between the men and the women and the general dancing fun too - it was exhausting but exciting.

At 6pm, Jag close members of her family headed off home, and half an hour later I followed Martin as he became part of a very emotional ceremony where tears flowed. Before that, outside the marquee he had to make his way through the younger female members of the bridal party, offering cash before he was able to be with his new wife! I think the girls and Jag were disappointed with the amount he was offering to be let in!

Once again, the newly wed couple were given money by Jag's grandfather and sweets from her mother, while her brother Peter gave gifts. Rice was thrown by jag to the four corners of the marquee before the tears flowed again and Jag and Martin left in a car back to Hardwick Hall with members of the Sikh community ceremoniously pushing the car from the drive as she left the family home as a married woman.

And then of course, it was back to the dancing and drinking and more fun .....

It was a great couple of days to be a wedding photographer. I was shattered - especially with two full days of editing afterwards whittling 2000+ images from the two days to a more acceptable 600 final edited images .. and I can show you only 17 in the space I have here.

I felt privileged to have been asked by Jagdeep and Martin to be a part of their wedding celebrations and I thanks their families and friends for embracing me and my cameras to capture such a great wedding celebration.

CHRIS AND KATE'S LANGLEY CASTLE WEDDING IN WINTER
I've been looking forward to Kate and Chris' wedding at Langley Castle in Northumberland, England on New Year's Eve all year.

And so it finally came to pass ..... on one of the snowiest days of the year and at the beginning of the longest period of snow and ice and low temperatures for 30 years in the UK!

Getting to Langley was a bit hairy to say the least, and I was up most of the previous night hoping that I would not break my record in never missing a wedding in 25 years!

I arrived about 4 hours before the ceremony - just to make sure, and met with Kate as she wandered around this magnificent castle wedding venue in her towelling dressing gown meeting and greeting her early arrivals - she was pretty chilled out and looking forward to her BIG celebration!

Arriving so early gave me a chance to put on my walking boots and suit which seems to have become my December wedding outfit at the end of 2009. I took some lovely photographs of Langley Castle in the snow before heading up to the bridal suite that I now know so well as Kate started to get ready.

You need to be fit at Langley Castle as a wedding photographer as there's five floors and no lift (well, there is a service lift) - it's a REAL castle, not a pretend one like many others!

Chris arrived about 12.15 through the snow from his parents home in Langley Castle and was met at the door of the castle where an old polish wedding custom (Chris' side of the family...) of offering the chief bridesmaid varying sizes of vodka bottles to allow him entry to the castle for his own wedding .. there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between Chris and the best man and the chief bridesmaid before a 'fee' was worked out!

Final preparations with Chris and the registrar and Anton from Langley Castle kept me busy - and up and down the stairs - alongside Kate's final preparations.

Both were very nervous so I kept in the background as much as possible and before long the ceremony was over and we were straight out in the snow through the front doors of the castle.

Fresh air was welcome as it was VERY warm during the ceremony, but Kate and Chris and I knew there would be only a few minutes before guests would want to be back in the warmth, but this was an ideal opportunity to make an image of everyone - the downside being that I had to 'sprint' four floors back up the castle to the bridal suite to make the photograph we needed!

In the hour afterwards before the wedding breakfast there was time to enjoy a relaxing drink - the guests, not me - and grab a few informal groups around the Christmas tree while listening to the fine harpist - and a quick dash outside for 5 minutes so that Kate could put her wellies on for a few fun snow photos!

The wedding breakfast flew along and soon it was laughter and tears during the fine speeches.

The weather didn't look good at all, so Chris and Kate and I dashed outside in a snow storm for a few minutes for a few last minute images with the floodlit Langley Castle and it was agreed that I should head off while I could for the two hour drive home on the snowy, scary roads and back home to the east coast.

A great day of celebration for both Chris and Kate.

I hope you enjoy a SNEAK PEAK of a few of the images from their great days. Once kate and Chris have enjoyed their honeymoon in Africa I shall post more. For relatives and friends, Kate and Chris will send you an e-mail link to their private gallery so you can view all the images from their wedding at Langley Castle Northumberland Northumberland.

Closing Sale at Bailey, Banks, and Biddle

por | | 0 comments

I'm probably the last one to hear this, but jewelry store chain Bailey, Banks, and Biddle is closing! The entire store is marked down 40 - 60% off. This is a great chance to get your wedding jewelry at a huge discount.

Closing Sale at Bailey, Banks, and Biddle
I checked out the selection at the Austin store this weekend, and they still have great pieces. Lots of sparkly diamonds, pearls, gemstones, and stuff for the men too: watches and cufflinks. I didn't find anything I wanted, but maybe you will! The Austin store will be open until December 31. One of the salesmen told me things are selling out quickly though, so don't wait too long.

Fan Programs Part 2

por | | 0 comments

I can provide a wide pie shape about 6.5 inches tall, 7 inches at the widest point. A single piece of card stock in this shape, however, does not a fan program make. It looks like a minimum of three pieces are needed.

If your guests line the pieces up, and grasp the bottom, the program can work as a fan.

Fan Programs Part 2

A hole is punched at the bottom; Ribbon threaded through will hold the fan together. In the photo below, the ribbon is wide enough that the program actually works better if you do not tie a bow.

Fan Programs Part 2

Truthfully though, this type of fan program does not work as well as the fan program type depicted in "Fan Programs Part 1". I will admit that it looks a bit more elegant, but if your main goal is fan power, the other fan program type is a better bet.

Wedding Activity Book for the Kiddos

por | | 0 comments

As part of the super-fun activity kit that will be passed out to all the kiddos at the reception, I made a little activity book to keep them busy. I tried not to spend too much time on this project, since I have so many other projects left before the wedding! I searched for "wedding coloring book", "wedding clip art", and "love maze" to put together the coloring and maze pages. I used Discovery Education's puzzle maker to put together the wedding word search. I'm including golf pencils and crayons in their activity pack to use with the book.

Download the whole activity book PDF here.
