FALL-ing leaves Wedding Aisle Runner

por | | 0 comments

Lacey had contacted me to do a custom aisle runner for her client's Autumn wedding.  She wanted a three letter monogram with fallen leaves randomly placed throughout the length of the runner.  The monogram was done in rich terra cotta and chocolate colors.  We did the leaves in a matching palette and added a spectacular shimmer paint finish.   Perfect finishing touch!

Title: Antony and the Johnsons - Rapture - live in Athens 29.06.09

Antony and the Johnsons - live in Athens - 29.06.09

Rapture

Eyes are falling
Lips are falling
Hair is falling to the ground
Slowly, softly
Falling, falling
Down in silence to the ground
All the world is falling, falling
All the blue
From me and you
Teardrops falling to the ground
Teardrops
I'm talkin' 'bout your teardrops

For instance
Oh my mama
She's been falling
Falling down for quite some time
And oh my papa
He's been falling
Falling down for quite some time
Oh my friends
I've watched them falling
Falling softly to the ground
Like the leaves
The Leaves are falling
Down in silence to the ground

Is this the rapture
Is this the rapture
Why don't you tell me
Is this the rapture
Is this the rapture
Our father who art in heaven
For the kingdom, the power, the glory, yours
Now and forever

Title: Falling Leaves - song for Autumn

From new CD, available at iTunes, http://cdbaby.com/tallstrom2 or http://www.tallstrom.com
Song for guitar + melody (here played on 2nd guitar) with a classical (right hand) approach.
TAB now available at http://www.tallstrom.com
Based on the common C chord shape. The intro/ outro is inspired by composer Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) and a technique used in his piece Alborado (Morning serenade).
Excessive use of ritardando/ accelerando - diminuendo/ crescendo :)

Recording info: For the album I tried using a stereo setup for a couple of songs (this and A Whiter Shade of Pale). I positioned the Rode NT2-A like I normally do, and then a Rode NT3 "pointing at the bridge", so to speak. It sounds pretty nice and gives a very wide sound image. However, I´m not sure it´s really necessary.

In this video I´m actually playing back to the (upcoming) album version, which was a real challenge... Phew...

Btw, if you´re interested, I recently added free TABs for Laura Palmer´s Theme, Ode to Billie Joe and Foggy Mountain Breakdown. I´ll post a Foggy Mountain Breakdown video once I´m properly warmed up - more banjo style madness.

Thanks for watching!

WEDDING: "A Caucasian's Traditional Chinese Wedding"

por | | 0 comments

Throughout the ceremony, the bride was marveled at her new husband's inquiries about the different traditional Chinese customs that he kept observing. While removing the palanquin, Steven spotted a saddle and a fire pit in front of him. After a brief hesitation, he asked, "What are these for?" The master of ceremony explained that the saddle symbolized peace as it has the same pronunciation in Chinese as "peace," while the fire pit is to burn bad luck away and brings a bright future.

TRADITION: College Football's Rose Bowl and Prime Rib = the Beef Bowl?!

por | | 0 comments

American society has so few ties to custom and ritual in this day and age.  That's why it's so interesting to see how sports and athleticism is the one area where tradition is not only expected, but it is also honoured and perpetuated.

An article from the Los Angeles Times wrote about the Beef Bowl, a five decades-long tradition of serving prime rib dinners in a fine dining setting to players of both teams competing in the Rose Bowl (on separate days, of course!). The two teams are invited in to a Los Angeles establishment to communally feast on a prime rib dinner with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, salad etc.  Inevitably, the event turns into a eating competition each year.  (Here's a tip for you wagerers: supposedly, the team with the most amount of meat consumed is statistically significantly shown to become the winner of the Rose Bowl game...)

[PLEASE NOTE:  For the record, i have been a vegetarian for over 20 years, and do not personally approve of such overt displays of excess when it comes to something like food and hunger...but i DO enjoy tradition and so i wanted to share this story with you!]

INFO: Outsourcing of Wedding Vows?? BAD Idea!!!

por | | 0 comments

The Wall Street Journal published an article today about a new trend, which is quite troubling to experienced and certified Celebrant and officiant professionals. The article is from the fabulous Cranky Consumer, and talks about outsourcing one's wedding vows. In fact, it speaks of 'outsourcing' more than the vows part...it suggests leaving it up to a website or computer to spit out the entire ceremony!??

The whole notion of outsourcing is fascinating, but a bad idea, nonetheless. This phenomenon of outsourcing vows (and more) is a result of several factours:
  • Clients (couples) who increasingly want to reflect themselves in every aspect of their (wedding) ceremonies - As they should! The participants in a ceremony deserve to be represented by the ceremony. A custom-written wedding (or funeral or baby naming/blessing or housewarming or etc.) is the only way to accomplish this. Otherwise, you may end up with a ceremony that sounds strangely similar to a MadLibs.

  • Event planners who are want to be a one-stop shop and provide all services to their clients, whether they are qualified to or not - The fact is, a planner's expertise is in organizing the details and logistics of an event. A venue's expertise is in providing a location and service at the location. But, it is NOT NOT NOT within a planner's breadth of knowledge or experience to provide the text to the ceremony. A venue does not have the experience or familiarity with the specific legal and structural rules involved in officiating and solemnising a marriage. They are not the ones who will complete the requisite documentation, either.
  • Choosing people who are not professional officiants to officiate weddings - Leave the writing to someone who has done it before. You can be sure all the love, loved ones, symbolism and/or history of your relationship is represented! Some people are hired for the day to perform a ceremony, but this is the one and only time they will ever perform this important task. There are lots of things to consider during a ceremony, since it is the focal point of the day, if only for a few minutes. Please also see above.
  • 'Professional' officiants who use canned ceremony texts and templates in a 'one-size-fits-all-ceremonies-and-clients' manner. Like i said before: MadLibs is the worst-case scenario. Cookie-cutter and generic is the best outcome when you leave it up to a computerized method or a "wedding mill".

Try a uniquely modern, individualized approach to the tradition of ceremony! Contact A NON-DENOMINATIONAL CEREMONY: ORANGE COUNTY & LOS ANGELES OFFICIANT today. And follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/celebrantvenus.

What is outsourcing?
Before you do anything else, you should want to know what outsourcing means, unless if you have become very acquainted with this term already. To put it simply, outsourcing is a process in which a parent company hires technology or services from other establishments or individuals operating outside itself to perform out a particular task. Once a deal has been made, the parent company shall not disturb any of its internal resources and operations but it will exploit on the knowledge, resources and capabilities of these individuals working outside the company.

Title: Agriculture Outsourcing: South America/Latin America farmland investing

Dave Ramaswamy, Partner - allied Venture gives an overview of why Agriculture in South America has excellent fundamentals and is well-positioned to feed the burgeoning population in India and the world.

Contract farming - can grow soya, wheat, sunflower, peanut, beans and pulses, sugarcane, jatropha and take output to india in raw or processed forms
Food processing - setup/acquire oilseed crushing, fruit/vegetable processing facilities
Think Agricultural Outsourcing - just like India in software, China in hardware - South America in agriculture
Contact: Marcos or Dave at info@alliedventure.com
www.alliedventure.com

Latin America farmland investment highlights:
Prices have fallen due to the global crisis; good entry point in 2009 for long-term investors.
Farmland Prices are even lower than those in punjab and tamilnadu
Productivity in Argentina/Brazil/Uruguay is three times compared to that in India, in the case of some crops like soy.
No unskilled labour problem since everything is mechanised and outsourced; 1000 hectare farm can be managed by 3 to 4 subcontracted workmen.
Use of latest agricultural machines and equipment; skilled agronomists and farm managers available.
No water problem.. South America has 20% of world freshwater reserves.
Logistics, warehouse and transportation world class
Clear land titles; low population density means no land squatters.
No limits on size of foreign land holdings.

Context:
India has been importing more than billion dollar worth soy oil and sunflower oil from south america every yr
India also buys wheat and sugar from time to time
India needs to invest in farmland overseas as it is doing in the case of petroleum fields. Issue of food security.
In India, population increases by 15-18 million every year, adding a new Argentina every 32 months, new Brazil every 10 years. Farmland area is diminishing due to expanding industry, commerce and residences

Wedding Cakes and suppliers ..... HMS TRINCOMALEE

Wedding Cakes and suppliers ..... HMS TRINCOMALEE
I'm forever being asked where to source different wedding cakes / wedding favours - even wedding dresses when I'm showing off our portfolio of wedding photographs to prospective clients.
I try to remember and make note of different suppliers at different weddings but it's not always possible as every day is hectic (as well as fun...).
The good thing is that I keep in contact with many of my brides from over the years (and I'm photographing some of their children now...), so I can always e-mail or ring a bride to find out where the placecards were from, or who supplied the bouquet or perhaps the supplier of the entertainment for the evening reception.
So, with that, here's a beautiful cake that was at Susan and Derek's Valentine's Day wedding at HMS Trincomalee at the Historic Quay in Hartlepool and I can let you know that the supplier was Ice 'n Easy in Durham City.

New Texas-Style Sweet Tea Signature Drinks

por | | 0 comments

When I started gathering inspiration for my wedding, I kept coming across lovely images of sweet tea vodka concoctions served in mason jars. They were mostly weddings in South Carolina and the drinks used Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. But wait, that's not made in Texas! So I disappointedly put them aside.

New Texas-Style Sweet Tea Signature Drinks(images from Style Me Pretty here and here)

Say hello to the new Texas-born-and-bred sweet tea vodka: Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka
New Texas-Style Sweet Tea Signature DrinksIs your jaw dropping to the floor in awe and excitement like mine? The founders of SAVVY vodka and Sweet Leaf Tea got together to make a beverage named after Austin's favorite swimming hole using some of the best ingredients Texas has to offer:
  • mineral-rich Texas spring water
  • 100% pure cane sugar from Sugarland, Texas
  • Clover honey from Austin’s Good Flow Honey Co.
My mouth is totally watering right now. I'm going straight to Specs or Twin Liquors to get my bottle.

Deep Eddy sweet tea vodka is a perfect base to the signature drink for a hometown Texas wedding! Try these recipes to see which one fits your taste and your wedding:

Title: Super Bowl XLIII Party ,Texas Style: 220 Pounds of Meat

Everything is bigger in Texas and parties are no exception. This is the 2009 version of our annual Super Bowl party - Super Bowl 43, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals. This year we had over 220 pounds of meat including: 4 briskets, pulled pork, Beef Wellington, deer nuggets (deer tenderloin and bacon wrapped around a jalapeno), Sabretts "dirty water" natural casing hot dogs, home ground burgers, crab cakes, assorted rotisserie roasts, bratwurst, and BBQ ribs. The sides included pizza bread, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, NYC soft street pretzels, along with several others. As for dessert, there were over a dozen choices including cheesecakes, tiramisu (with enough alcohol in it to get you sauced), apple pies, brownies, and others. Finally, there was an assortment of beverages to wash everything down.

It took us 2 days of prep before the game to begin putting this all together. I had to bring one of my grills, an oven, and several warming devices over to the host house to help crank out all this food in a timely manner.
