NEWS: California Supreme Court Grants Review in Prop 8 Legal Challenges

por | | 0 comments

This is an official email i received from Equality California:

Court to Determine Constitutionality of Prop 8

Today the California Supreme Court granted review in the legal challenges to Proposition 8, which passed by a narrow margin of 52 percent on November 4. In an order issued today, the Court agreed to hear the case and set an expedited briefing schedule. The Court also denied an immediate stay. On November 5, 2008, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit challenging the validity of Proposition 8 in the California Supreme Court on behalf of six couples and Equality California. The City of San Francisco, joined by the City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, and Santa Clara County, filed a similar challenge, as did a private attorney in Los Angeles. The lawsuits allege that, on its face, Proposition 8 is an improper revision rather than an amendment of the California Constitution because, in its very title, which was “Eliminates the right to marry for same-sex couples,” the initiative eliminated an existing right only for a targeted minority. If permitted to stand, Proposition 8 would be the first time an initiative has successfully been used to change the California Constitution to take way an existing right only for a particular group. Such a change would defeat the very purpose of a constitution and fundamentally alter the role of the courts in protecting minority rights. According to the California Constitution, such a serious revision of our state Constitution cannot be enacted through a simple majority vote, but must first be approved by two-thirds of the Legislature. Since the three lawsuits submitted on November 5, three other lawsuits challenging Proposition 8 have been filed. In a petition filed on November 14, 2008, leading African American, Latino, and Asian American groups argued that Proposition 8 threatens the equal protection rights of all Californians. On November 17, 2008, the California Council of Churches and other religious leaders and faith organizations representing millions of members statewide, also filed a petition asserting that Proposition 8 poses a severe threat to the guarantee of equal protection for all, and was not enacted through the constitutionally required process for such a dramatic change to the California Constitution. On the same day, prominent California women’s rights organizations filed a petition asking the Court to invalidate Proposition 8 because of its potentially disastrous implications for women and other groups that face discrimination. In May of 2008, the California Supreme Court held that barring same-sex couples from marriage violates the equal protection clause of the California Constitution and violates the fundamental right to marry. Proposition 8 would completely eliminate the right to marry only for same-sex couples. No other initiative has ever successfully changed the California Constitution to take away a right only from a targeted minority group. Over the past 100 years, the California Supreme Court has heard nine cases challenging either legislative enactments or initiatives as invalid revisions of the California Constitution. In three of those cases, the Court invalidated those measures.

You can get complete information regarding the actual case itself from the California courts website.

When Fox News' supposedly "straight news" program "Special Report" broadcast a story last week on the DREAM Act currently before the US Congress, "Special Report" spun the DREAM Act as a "nightmare," misreported to whom the DREAM Act applies, and, worst of all, reported on the appeal of last week's 7-0 California Supreme Court decision in favor of immigrant equality without ever reporting the unanimous decision for immigrants' rights itself, as I show in this video.

Blog Title Graphics

por | | 0 comments

These days, many many people are starting their own online blogs. Sometimes it's just a life journal. Sometimes it is a way to keep in contact with friends/family. And sometimes, the journal is about something more specific- political blogs, food blogs, scrapbooking blogs, some interest or goal of the blogger.

I don't know how things work with livejournal, but with blogspot and wordpress, you can add a title graphic. Sure, you can find many gorgeous layouts on the internet, that people have created. But the crown piece, the first thing the blogger sees- is the title. Many blogs just have some blocky text declaring their title.

Well, more and more people want something personalized, something custom, something... more interesting.

I've recently gotten a start on creating blog title graphics for people. My own, you can see, is not overly complicated. And yet, it is much nicer than a blocky "Save the Date Originals".

To view some blog title graphics I have created, follow this link.

New Texas-Style Sweet Tea Signature Drinks

When I started gathering inspiration for my wedding, I kept coming across lovely images of sweet tea vodka concoctions served in mason jars. They were mostly weddings in South Carolina and the drinks used Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. But wait, that's not made in Texas! So I disappointedly put them aside.

Say hello to the new Texas-born-and-bred sweet tea vodka: Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka
New Texas-Style Sweet Tea Signature DrinksIs your jaw dropping to the floor in awe and excitement like mine? The founders of SAVVY vodka and Sweet Leaf Tea got together to make a beverage named after Austin's favorite swimming hole using some of the best ingredients Texas has to offer:

Title: Super Bowl XLIII Party ,Texas Style: 220 Pounds of Meat

Everything is bigger in Texas and parties are no exception. This is the 2009 version of our annual Super Bowl party - Super Bowl 43, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals. This year we had over 220 pounds of meat including: 4 briskets, pulled pork, Beef Wellington, deer nuggets (deer tenderloin and bacon wrapped around a jalapeno), Sabretts "dirty water" natural casing hot dogs, home ground burgers, crab cakes, assorted rotisserie roasts, bratwurst, and BBQ ribs. The sides included pizza bread, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, NYC soft street pretzels, along with several others. As for dessert, there were over a dozen choices including cheesecakes, tiramisu (with enough alcohol in it to get you sauced), apple pies, brownies, and others. Finally, there was an assortment of beverages to wash everything down.

It took us 2 days of prep before the game to begin putting this all together. I had to bring one of my grills, an oven, and several warming devices over to the host house to help crank out all this food in a timely manner.

Our Dark Purple / Light Blue Bouquets, Bouts, and Corsages

por | | 0 comments

I can't even describe how much I loved the flowers at our wedding. I gave the florist some ideas of the style I wanted (very garden-y) and general colors (dark purple / light blue), but told her to go wild and gave her freedom to pick specific flowers and arrangements. I think the flowers came out so well because I wasn't overly specific with the vendor and let her be creative.

Bouquets

The leaves in all the bouquets were grown by my mother in a garden she maintains at the church where we had the wedding. It was important for us that she be able to contribute something to the flowers, so we searched for a while for a florist who would include things from her garden.  Growing our own greenery didn't save us any money (since it was more work for the florist), but it was very meaningful and made the bouquets very personal and unique.

Flower Girl Halos

The only flower I told the florist not to use was roses. For whatever reason, I felt like they were overplayed in the wedding world. The florist used orchids instead of the traditional spray roses for the flower girl halos, which she said was a first!
