Gosh she looks happy... and she was!
We all had a long, hard, but enjoyable day at Nicola and Andrew's wedding. There was a lot of fun and laughter and she looked beautiful too (OK Andrew, you looked great as well....)
My wife Lesley really likes this image - and that's good enough for me!

Title: Life After Stroke Awards 2008: Adult Courage 18 to 64 years

In recognition that a stroke can happen to anyone at any time, The Stroke Association presents the courage awards to people who have demonstrated inspirational courage in overcoming personal, physical, emotional or communication problems after their stroke.

WINNER: NICOLA HARKIN, AGED 34
Before her stroke, Nicola was studying podiatry at Manchester University. She was a chatter box, sat on the debating team and was extremely outgoing.

Nicola had a stroke in 1995 aged just 22 years old. Nicola's stroke was believed to have been caused by the chemotherapy she was receiving for ovarian cancer. After her stroke, Nicola developed the communication disability aphasia, lost all feeling in the right side of her body and needed a wheelchair to get around. Nicola also developed epilepsy.

Nicola found it hard to cope emotionally and experienced severe depression, so she moved back to Northern Ireland to be close to family and friends. Over time Nicola gradually began to regain her confidence and, slowly but surely, got on the road to recovery. Nicola enrolled on a number of courses and received speech therapy from the NHS and Speechmatters -- Part of The Stroke Association.

Nicola is now able to drive again and is also pursuing a new passion of photography. She volunteers at the Cookstown Conversation Group where she initially went for speech therapy. Despite living with aphasia, Nicola has given numerous speeches at various fundraising events in Northern Ireland, and has lobbied the Northern Ireland Assembly about aphasia. She also recently starred in a documentary about aphasia which was broadcast on BBC1 Northern Ireland. Nicola is dedicated to educating people about stroke and aphasia and is an ambassador for stroke survivors and people living with aphasia.
