What's a house party and what do they wear?

por | | 0 comments

A fellow bride and I recently joked that we both asked people to be in our "house party" without really knowing what that meant.  Google searches don't turn up much more than tips on having your wedding at home (a different kind of house party).  Here's what I've heard from other Southern brides and gleaned from websites.

What is a house party? How is it different from bridesmaids?

A house party is a Southern tradition through and through. I've never met someone from above the Mason-Dixon line that had heard of it before, but every single Houston wedding planner I talked to asked me how many bridesmaids I had and how many girls were in my house party.

The main difference between a house party member and a bridesmaid is that the house party does not stand up with you at the altar in the church; they sit with your family in the front row.  There are lots of other duties that the house party can help you with: reading during the ceremony, guest book attendant, gift table attendant, handing out programs, serving cake, and just helping you get through the day.

Other than the whole altar thing, the house party is just as much a part of the wedding party as the bridesmaids.  Usually, the house party participates in all of the same wedding festivities as the bridesmaids: bridal showers, bachelorette party, bridal party luncheon, wedding day pictures, etc.  They also get a small gift from the bride as thanks for helping with the wedding.

The house party is analogous to ushers who aren't groomsmen: they don't stand up at the altar, but they are certainly vital to the wedding day.

Who is in the house party?

The most common answer to this is "women that the bride is close to, but she is unable to have them as a bridesmaid."  There are a few reasons to have a house party in the first place and to include a woman in the house party:
  1. You have way too many bridesmaids already!  House parties were most likely created to include as many of the bride's friends as possible in the bridal party, without overcrowding the altar.
  2. You want to include and honor a woman, but you're not especially close to her for whatever reason.  This often includes your groom's sisters or college friends you've grown apart from.
  3. You're close to a woman, but she cannot afford to be a bridesmaid (buy the dress, travel to the showers, etc) or she lives far away and will not be able to participate in wedding activities like bridal showers.  You shouldn't assume this will be the case; you should ask them to be a bridesmaid first.  If they voice financial or distance concerns, you can give them the option of being in the house party to make them more comfortable but still have them involved in the wedding.

Being asked to be in someone's house party should always be considered an honor, not a slight.  In my case, I chose to have a house party so that the number of bridesmaids and groomsmen would be equal: that's it.  My house party are no less than bridesmaids in my eyes.  If my groom could rustle up two more friends to stand up with him, everyone would be a bridesmaid!

What does the house party wear?

Typically, the house party does not wear the same dress as the bridesmaids.  The house party members pick their own dress individually; the bride doesn't pick it out and they don't have matching dresses like bridesmaids.  This can often save house party members some money!  Most brides ask the house party to wear a black dress, since many would be able to pull out the Little Black Dress.

(some house party dress options: J. Crew 1, 2, 3)

Some brides ask the house party to wear a dress in a similar color to the bridesmaid dress, or some other color in the wedding palette.  This Texas bride asked her house party to wear pink!

Unifying the house party's look

Since the house party members will all be wearing different dresses, the bride can ask them to all wear a specific item to help them stand out from the crowd and identify them as "someone special".  This is usually something the bride buys for the women, so it's small: a corsage, a magnolia in their hair, shoes (like these polka dot ones!), or a special necklace.

Jenna Bush recently brought the term "house party" into the media with her wedding last May.  She had one bridesmaid / maid of honor (her twin sister), and 14 house party members.  Her fourteen friends were not bridesmaids because they did not stand up with her at the altar during the ceremony.  Since her house party was so large, she chose to have Lela Rose design custom dresses in a range of colors.  The house party was able to give input on what style of dress they wanted, but the look was unified.

Separation  by W. S. Merwin

Your absence has gone through me
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its color.

What a beautiful poem!  i heard a short interview with the poet from his home on Maui on NPR.  The Library of Congress named Mr. Merwin as Poet Laureate on Thursday.  See the NY Times article here.

Poker Chip Cards

por | | 0 comments

A customer of mine, who is getting married in Las Vegas, had the idea to make their save the date announcement look somewhat like a poker chip. This meant we would surely need something circular.

Available are circular cards or circular magnets, 4 inches in diameter. The minimum order of magnets is 100; The minimum for cards is 20.

Check out her design:

Poker Chip Cards

If you went with a card instead of a magnet, you would have a white back, with a printed front.

This design idea can easily be modified a bit for another wedding related event- such as a bachelor party- or just a personal casino themed party invitation.

Poker Chip Cards

If mailing these out alone, you would probably want to go with a 5.7x4.35 inch envelope. It's a common size, and thus less expensive than other envelope sizes.

Beach related invitations

por | | 0 comments

Beach related invitationsThese invitations were created for a customer of mine. She ordered her save the dates from me, then came back later with an invitation idea. Her invitation idea was a custom project, and so it took a while for me to answer her emails. She was patient with me, and we went went through number of revisions. At long last, the end result was a 7 card invitation, plus response cards. Because this is a destination wedding, there was a lot of important and useful information to include.

The 7 cards are 5.5 inches square. Invitation and RSVP envelopes were printed. Because we went with a linen card stock, I did have a higher limit against how small I would make the text. Each card design is mainly text- a fun font for the titles, a more basic font for the information- and seashells.

Beach related invitationsAlso because of the linen card stock, I recommended not going with a photographic cover image. The photo cover image -also created just for her project- that we considered using for the invitation cover card was something to tie in with the glossy front save the dates and thank you cards she ordered. The thank you cards (left) glossy front folded 5.5x4.25 inches. Generally for any designs involving photographic and full coverage graphics, people are happiest going with glossy cards.

Wild Purple Bouquet Inspirations

por | | 0 comments

I had a really clear vision for what I wanted when it came to the centerpieces for our reception, but I wasn't so clear on my bouquet. I basically handed pictures of things I liked to my florist, and said "Ummm something like this."

Looking at the pictures together now, the themes I see are some wild greenery and lots of different purples and types of flowers mixed together. They're also not perfect round bouquets, but more natural shapes. I liked bouquet wraps that let the stems peak out from the bottom; again a more natural look.

AMY AND FRASER'S GREAT WEDDING AT ELLINGHAM HALL NEAR ALNWICK IN NORTHUMBERLAND
Amy and Fraser met at university in Aberdeen and since then have travelled the world from their original family homes in Scotland and Northumberland.

Nowadays they live in Calgary in Canada, so organising a wedding from thousands of mles away was never going to be easy - but thanks to the internet and some great organisational skills - they did it - in style!

Amy had seen a wedding that I had photographed for Liz and Steve at Ellingham Hall, a beautiful exclusive use wedding venue in Northumberland last year on my BLOG and e-mailed to to ask some questions. Once I had done that she was determined, on the basis of my wedding blog and my website that she wanted me to be a small but important part of her wedding at Ellingham Hall!

Fraser and Amy visited Northumberland in September - and we met for the first time and got on really well, and I met with her mum too. We e-mailed each other a few more times, and last Saturday, finally was the date for the BIG day at Ellingham Hall.

It was a gray overcast day, drizzling rain and there was fog too on the roads as I made my way though Newcastle and then headed up the A1 past Alnwick, but once I was in the beautiful Ellingham Hall, all decked out with Christmas trees and decorations and open roaring fires, I was transported to a much nicer place!

Amy's mum came to greet me and before long I was watching and photographing all the decorations and detail pieces which come in so handy when I come to designing their wedding album - and Fraser appeard wearing his kilt but he was wandering about in his running shoes! Cool calm and collected!

Amy was tucked away on the third floor having her hair styled and all around the lovely old house, people were appearing in their wedding finery.

The service was short and sweet - with lots of laughs and immediately after the ceremony we headed straight outside as there was only about 10 minutes of daylight left and we knew we wanted to get a good group shot of everyone together.

After that was a relaxing hour or two with canapes and drinks before heading into the main hall, decked out with candles and decorations for our dinner and speeches before chilling out for a while in the reception room and the main lounge as the ceilidh band set up.

Then Fraser and Amy surprised us all by putting on their cowboy boots for their first dance and Fraser donned a wonderful stetson which made him look so handsome for their first dance!

The candles .. the music .. the ambiance and the fun stayed with me as I headed for a long drive down the A1 back home.

A great day for everyone!

I hope you enjoy a SNEAK PEAK of a few of the images from their great day. Once Amy and Fraser have returned from Paris and their visits to relatives over Christmas, I shall post more. For relatives and friends, Amy will send you an e-mail link to their private gallery so you can view all the images from their wedding at Ellingham Hall
